What Is Invisalign?

There’s nothing wrong with traditional metal braces. They’ve been used for decades to straighten teeth and correct bites because they work. Sometimes, though, you want to straighten your teeth without announcing it to the world every time you smile. If this sounds like you, Invisalign is the answer.

Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic system that uses a series of clear plastic aligners to correct malocclusions and misaligned teeth, rather than the brackets and wires of conventional braces. As you progress through each set of aligners, your teeth will slowly and gently move to their new positions. Once you’ve reached the final set of aligners, you’ll have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted, without the discomfort and inconvenience of traditional metal braces.

Benefits of Invisalign

Aligner technology has become more sophisticated since it was first introduced, which means most patients are now candidates for Invisalign. Only a small number of orthodontic cases are not a fit for this system. Advantages of Invisalign over traditional braces include:

SmartTrack Material

Invisalign’s unique SmartTrack material is thin, unobtrusive, and virtually invisible. Your friends, coworkers, and classmates won’t even realize you’re wearing aligners.

Convenience and Comfort

With poking wires and bulky brackets, traditional braces are often uncomfortable. Invisalign feels more natural on your teeth and because your aligners can be removed, you can continue to brush, floss, and eat as you normally would.

With its state-of-the-art SmartTrack material and SmartForce features, Invisalign can be used to successfully treat crossbite, crowding, gaps between teeth, underbites, overbites, and open-bites. Wear your aligners the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day and you can achieve results as fast as, and sometimes even faster than, conventional metal braces.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign treatment plans are unique to each patient, but the overall process is the same. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish:

Taking Imaging

During your first appointment, we use an iTero scanner to create digital impressions of your teeth and jaw. This allows us to make a highly accurate 3D model of your smile.

Creating a Treatment Plan and Preview

We use Invisalign’s ClinCheck software to create a custom treatment plan and a preview of how your teeth will move throughout your treatment. You’ll also be able to see how your teeth will look once treatment is complete.

Fabricating Your Aligners

Your Invisalign aligners are fabricated using a high-tech 3D printing process. Most patients need between 20 and 30 sets of aligners for their treatment.

Wearing Your Aligners

Invisalign only works when you wear your aligners as directed, so it’s important that you wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day and only remove them for eating, brushing, and flossing. Every few weeks, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners and your teeth will gradually move. You’ll come to our office for a check-in appointment every six to eight weeks so we can monitor the progress of your treatment.

Maintaining Your Results

Once your Invisalign treatment is complete, you’ll need to maintain your results. We’ll provide you with a set of retainers to help keep your teeth in place so you can have a beautiful smile for a lifetime.

Invisalign® FAQ

How long does it take to straighten your teeth with Invisalign?

While every patient is different, Invisalign treatment usually takes between nine and 18 months. It’s important to wear your aligners as directed, for 20 to 22 hours a day, or your treatment time will be longer.

Which is better, braces or Invisalign?

There are some rare orthodontic cases where braces are better than Invisalign, but for most patients, Invisalign and braces both do an exceptional job at straightening teeth and correcting bites. The difference between the two is a matter of preference. For example, if you want an orthodontic treatment that is discreet and comfortable, Invisalign is better.

Do you sleep with Invisalign in?

Yes, you should wear your aligners while you sleep. Since they need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day and most of us sleep for eight hours a night, your treatment would be very slow if you didn’t!

How much does it cost for Invisalign?

Invisalign can cost anywhere between $3000 and $7000, but the exact cost depends on your orthodontic needs. We will provide you with an estimate prior to starting treatment so you can know exactly what to expect. If you have dental insurance that covers the cost of orthodontia, it is likely to cover at least some of the cost of Invisalign.

Who is a good candidate for Invisalign?

Since Invisalign only works when the aligners are being worn, Invisalign isn’t usually recommended for children, who may remove their aligners and misplace them. Teenagers and adults are the best candidates for Invisalign.
