For a severely damaged or decayed tooth, a dental crown is typically the right choice. Traditional lab-created crowns are still popular, but increasingly, patients and dentists are turning to CEREC restorations instead. CEREC stands for either CERamic REConstruction or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, depending on who you ask. Whichever acronym you use, though, there are 3 main reasons to choose a CEREC same day crown.
While a traditional lab-created crown takes two visits to complete, CEREC same day crowns are far more convenient for both the patient and the dentist. As the name suggests, you will visit us just once. First, we will repair and prepare your tooth. Then, we will take digital impressions (no more messy impression material!). Feeding the digital impressions into a computer allows us to use specialized CAD (computer aided design) software to create a 3-D model of your new crown.
We send the specifications to our in-office milling machine, which fabricates your crown from a block of color-matched, high-quality dental porcelain. We then bond the crown to your tooth and send you on your way. There is no need for an uncomfortable, unsightly temporary crown or a second appointment.
Although porcelain over metal crowns are reasonably aesthetic, they do have limitations. One of the biggest problems is that the metal frame can create a thin, dark line along your gums. This makes these crowns especially problematic for front teeth.
Since they are made completely of dental porcelain, CEREC same day crowns provide the most natural and highly aesthetic appearance. No metal frame means no dark line.
3. Strength and Durability
Using CAD technology, we can attain a more precise, secure fit than is possible with a traditional lab-created crown. The dental porcelain used in our CEREC crowns is stain-resistant, biocompatible, strong, and durable. It is closer to natural tooth enamel and roughly 18 percent stronger than a typical lab-created crown.
Of course, no single solution is right for all patients. We will discuss your options in detail to help you decide what best meets your individual needs and goals. For many patients, though, a CEREC same day crown is the optimal way to reduce the time sitting in the dental chair while providing top quality aesthetics and functionality.
