June 15, 2007    Colgate has announced that Counterfeit Colgate Toothpaste has been found in the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut area. The toothpaste in question says it is manufactured in South Africa and Colgate says it does not import from there. Please check to be sure you do not have any of the Counterfeit Colgate Toothpaste in your home. Reuters reports it as follows:  Click here for the full story from Reuters NEW YORK (Reuters) - Colgate-Palmolive Co.. on Thursday warned counterfeit "Colgate" toothpaste that may contain a toxic chemical had been found in discount stores in four U.S. states. "There are indications that this product does not contain fluoride and may contain diethylene glycol," the company said of the toothpaste found in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Colgate-Palmolive said it does not use, nor has ever used, diethylene glycol as an ingredient in its toothpaste anywhere in the world. The chemical, also known as DEG and sometimes illegally used as an inexpensive sweetener and thickening agent, is commonly found in solvents and antifreeze. More recently you may have heard that, counterfeit toothpaste falsely packaged as "Colgate" has been found in discount stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. There are indications that this counterfeit product may also contain Diethylene Glycol. We want to reassure you that the counterfeit toothpaste is not manufactured or distributed by Colgate and has no connection with the Company whatsoever. Colgate does not use, nor has it ever used, Diethylene Glycol as an ingredient in Colgate toothpaste anywhere in the world. In addition, Colgate-Palmolive Company does not import toothpaste into the United States from China. Colgate is working closely with the US FDA to help to identify those responsible for the counterfeit product. The counterfeit toothpaste can be easily recognized because it is labelled as "Manufactured in South Africa." Colgate does not import toothpaste into the United States from South Africa. In addition, the counterfeit packages examined so far have several misspellings including: "isclinically" "SOUTH AFRLCA" "South African Dental Assoxiation". Regardless of the country where we manufacture it, Colgate toothpaste is made in strict adherence to our global safety and quality standards. These standards include quality checks on incoming materials and finished goods as well as supplier qualification procedures to ensure the safety and quality of all ingredients.
